Artisanal Sawmilling & Resource Stewardship
in Northern Virginia

Transforming your property’s natural resources into high-performance building materials is the ultimate expression of sustainable construction. At Rock Ridge Contracting, our on-site sawmilling service allows you to close the loop of the building process. We enable homeowners across Northern Virginia and West Virginia to utilize their own land’s timber for custom structural beams, flooring, and artisanal accents.

The Portable Advantage: We Come to You

Transporting large logs to a commercial sawmill is often cost-prohibitive and difficult. We solve this by bringing our professional-grade portable sawmill directly to your job site or property. Whether you have a single downed oak or a stand of timber cleared for a building pad, we maximize the yield from every log.

Custom Structural Beams & Timbers

Need an 8x12 oak beam for a fireplace mantel or a full set of custom-cut rafters for a timber-frame barn? We specialize in custom structural milling. By harvesting from your own land, you're not just saving on material costs; you're building a home with a story literally rooted in your property.

Specialty Cuts: Live Edge Slabs & Bookmatching

For those looking to create unique interior accents, we offer specialized cuts like live edge slabs and bookmatched boards. These pieces are ideal for dining tables, kitchen islands, and custom shelving, showcasing the natural beauty and grain patterns unique to your land's trees.

Sawmilling FAQ

Our portable mill can handle logs up to 36 inches in diameter and up to 20 feet in length, providing flexibility for almost any residential or agricultural milling project. For larger or unusually shaped logs, we can make multiple passes to produce the dimensions you need.

We provide green-milled lumber and can advise you on the best air-drying practices for your specific wood species. Proper stickering, stacking, and cover techniques are critical for achieving stable moisture content before the lumber is used in finished construction. Air-drying typically takes 6 to 12 months depending on species and thickness.

Yes. We regularly mill logs from trees removed for safety, development, or storm damage in suburban areas like Loudoun, Frederick, and Clarke Counties. This gives new life as custom lumber to trees that would otherwise become firewood or waste, and it's a meaningful way to preserve a part of your property's history.

Hardwoods like White Oak, Red Oak, Walnut, and Cherry produce beautiful structural beams and live-edge slabs. Softwoods like Eastern White Pine and Poplar are excellent for framing, siding, and interior paneling. During our timber walk, we evaluate what's available on your land and recommend the best use for each species.

We typically price milling by the hour, which includes setup, milling, and cleanup. For larger projects tied to one of our custom home or barn builds, the milling cost is often incorporated into the overall project estimate. We provide a clear quote after evaluating the volume and species of timber to be milled.
